port-albert-rescue-vessel-cg19Victorian Volunteer Coast Guard at Port Albert & Port Welshpool, along with the Victoria Police, Woodside Surf Life Saving Club and Port Albert CFA will be conducting an exercise out of Port Albert on Saturday 27 October.

The emergency management exercise day is being run as part of Victoria Police Community Safety Month and at the start of the Gippsland Snapper fishing season.

The day is focused on promoting safe recreational boating and creating a greater awareness of the great work done by Volunteer Emergency Services in the area.

The day will consist of a functional exercise, with displays and advice from various agencies.

If the weather is inclement the day will proceed with a table top exercise and displays at the Port Albert Coast Guard premises.

Local police at Yarram and members of the Port Albert Coast Guard have banded together to make this day a family fun day aimed at providing advise and guidance for safe recreational boating.

The exercise will commence around 9:30 am and will test operating functions between Victoria Police and the other agencies.

We will be looking at communications, interaction between the agencies, search and recovery techniques and safety aspects of marine rescues.

The Port Albert Coast Guard has been preparing for this event for some time, refurbishing the communications area at their Port Albert headquarters and conducting training exercises with the Woodside Surf Club.

Victorian Water Police & Port Albert Coast Guard will be offering boat and equipment safety inspections and advice on hazards within the local water ways.

If you're not sure about how to check your inflatable life vest, come down and members from the Water Police or Coast Guard will show you how.

Pains Wessex who manufactures flares will be conducting a demonstration on the deployment of a range of flares.

Staff from Fisheries Victoria and Transport Safety Victoria, Marine Safety will be there to answer questions and provide handouts.

Weather and Rescues permitting, at around 12:15 pm, the RAAF Search & Rescue Helicopter will land at Rutter Park and provide a static display until about 1.45 pm. The crew will then conduct an air/sea recovery of a person in distress from the Port Albert Harbor.

If you have an interest in becoming a volunteer in the Coast Guard, or have an interest in boating, come down and speak to one of the volunteers. Victoria Volunteer Coast Guard offers a wide range of courses and skills for the recreational fisherman.
