VF17 started in February 2004 with 33 members and a vessel on loan from Melbourne. In the first few months a radio room was established and members training was well under way.

A grant application to build a 12 metre vessel, suited to the seas around Portland was progressing and plans for the vessel was exciting times.

In November 2007 we took delivery of CG17 and she went straight into service the next day.

As at May 2012 some of our stats:

  • Our members have provided in excess of 33,000 volunteer hours over eight years.
  • We have been called to help over 200 vessels at a combined value in excess of $34,000,000.
  • Just over 500 people have received help from our group and our radio room have handled over 40,000 radio calls.
