Weather & Warnings

It can be both friend and foe. Calm winds and seas make for enjoyable power boating, waterskiing, and fishing. A fresh breeze and a light chop provide an invigorating sailing or wind surfing experience. But the sudden emergence of dark clouds, shifting and gusty winds, torrential downpours and lightning can turn a day's pleasure into a nightmare of distress.

Weather outlooks give general information to help you decide whether or not to continue making plans. Before you set out on your planed trip or days outing, pay close attention to the TV, Radio weather broadcasts and to more detailed marine weather forecasts at Australian Government National Weather service - Bureau of Meteorolog's website. Take note of Warnings in the forecasts. Warnings alert mariners to higher winds and waves either occurring now or forecast to occur up to 24 hours from now. Warnings for conditions expected later give mariners time to take action to protect life and property.

You know the weather -it changes! The change often occurs out of your sight and may be headed your way. You should listen to the Coast Guard weather reports on your marine radio or call your local Coast Guard base for a weather update. It is also a good idea to LOG-ON with your local Coast Guard base when on the water and please remember to LOG-OFF when leaving the water.

Australian Volunteer Coast Guard listening channels are, VHF (Channel 16) and 27Mhz (Channel 88)
