Why did I join the Australian Volunteer Coast Guard?

I joined Coast Guard about three years ago and was elected as Flotilla Commander last May. When I am not doing Coast Guard I am the Operations Manager for Aurora Place, a 44-storey premium grade commercial office building in the Sydney CBD. My job includes overseeing operational contracts and ensuring that the building services operate correctly.

I served over 20 years in the Royal Australian Navy as an officer and retired as a Lieutenant Commander. In the Navy I was a seaman officer and helicopter pilot and my last position was the second in command (Executive Officer) of HMAS Tobruk, the 6,000 tonne landing ship.

After retiring from the Navy I was always looking for a volunteer organisation that would enable me to give back some of my knowledge and skills to others. I found this opportunity in the Coast Guard.

Apart from my love of being back on the water, I get a great deal out of being in the Coast Guard especially my involvement in the training of members. It gives me a lot of satisfaction when members gain, and become confident in, new found skills.
